Getting started
If you are coaching a new team or taking over an existing team, the one thing that will grab you right away is the different level of skill amongst the players.
This is the first thing you need to do, let them play a game and look at what each kid is good, or not so good at. Each player will be able to bring something to your team.
Starting a team from an early age is definitely the way to go if you can. Most people get involved in coaching as they have a son or daughter who takes up soccer.
Why do kids get involved?
Perhaps they dream of being the next Messi or Ronaldo? The majority of kids play football for the fun, exercise, to make friends and that great feeling of being part of a team.
The main thing is as a Coach you need to prepare. Prepare your session, know who is coming and suit the sessions to that. There is no point having a session that needs 16 players when only 11 are coming. Don't neglect the weaker players but stretch the better players. Don't take the easy and lazy options for a warm up, what benefit do kids get from running round a field for ten minutes, warm up with a ball at their feet.
And ENJOY IT, it is meant to be fun for you also!
